Lingayen, Pangasinan declares state of calamity

The municipality of Lingayen, Pangasinan on Friday declared a state of calamity due to the onslaught of the enhanced southwest monsoon or Habagat and Typhoons Egay and Falcon.

The Sangguniang Bayan passed Resolution No. 475, S-2023, authorizing the local government to tap its quick response fund (QRF) to extend assistance to all 32 barangays in Lingayen affected by the widespread flooding.

“Whereas, heeding the urgency of the request, the Sangguniang Bayan deemed it imperative to declare the Municipality of Lingayen under the state of calamity in order to utilize the QRF to give aid to the victims of the two succeeding typhoons and habagat,” the resolution reads.

On July 31, the town of Calasiao was placed under a state of calamity due to the flooding caused by the continuous rains brought by the weather systems.

As of August 4, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the death toll from the inclement weather rose to 29. Of the figures, only two have been confirmed, while the remaining 27 are still for validation.

At least 11 people are still missing while 140 to 165 sustained injuries.

The number of total affected people breached 3,028,040 or 805,621, of which, a total of 57,226 people or 15,473 families are staying in 648 evacuation centers while 229,831 individuals or 57,000 families are taking shelter in other places, the NDRRMC said.

Around 232 cities and municipalities have declared a state of calamity up to date. —Sundy Locus/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
